Is It a Public Affairs Job?

Happy Friday – you’ve almost made it through the week! Plenty of great public affairs and communications opportunities beckon below, but first:
  • Our Saturday diversions are usually made up on the spot – but we’ve got an advance plan ready for a change): tomorrow, we bring you government affairs/legislative/lobbying jobs outside of the DC area – much in the same spirit as our recent communications-focused spotlight on far-flung opportunities.
  • Coming Monday – we temporarily change up the format here at DCPA+CJ
The American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry notes three opportunities available at their McLean Gardens/upper Wisconsin Ave. HQ (scroll down to find all):
The Conference of State Bank Supervisors is proud to claim the title: “Champions of the State Banking System Since 1902.” The Conference seeks a Policy Director to work with stakeholders build the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System into a system of unprecedented state coordination. Public policy and financial services industry experience are desired.

Hill & Knowlton would like to identify worthy candidates for a Senior Account Executive, Media Research & Monitoring position. You’ll need 3-5 years of experience in media analysis, communications, international affairs, market research, or related fields to qualify for consideration.

We missed the chance to include these opportunities from Third Way in our recent Think Tank Jobs extravaganza:
The University of Maryland/University College is looking for a Web/Multimedia Developer. Pay is in the $40-50k range, plus tuition benefits. Also available: Multimedia Writer/Editor, with similar pay scale.

Do you think Director, Smithsonian Folklife Festival (with the Smithsonian Institution, natch) qualifies as a public affairs/communications job? Duties do, after all, include d oversight of public relations functions; spokesperson/media relations work, and outreach to Congress, heads of state and other officials. I think that’s a big yes, then. Pay range: $86k-$102k, job ID 09A-MS-295093-DEU-CFCH, apply by April 17.

The Smithsonian cabal also covets a new Visual Information Specialist (translation: web designer) - $60k-$79k, job ID 09A-MS-294957-TRF-NASM, apply by Apr. 3.

The Council on Foreign Relations has multiple and highly-coveted DC-based Intern opportunities available, along with several Intern slots in their New York offices. The DCPA+CJ editorial team ranks the CFR.org website as among the very best we've seen in the think tank/NGO category.

Ketchum PR is in search mode for a Practice Leader, Public Affairs. They desire 15 + years related experience, which should include some combination of PR agency, Capitol Hill, Executive Branch, trade association, corporate government relations and/or national political campaign experience.

New opportunities from the United Nations Foundation:
WPFW – 89.3 on your FM dial – needs to add a Public Affairs Intern to the playlist. Duties include research, booking guests, and updating website. Give 'em a listen.

Alaska-headquartered military contractor Chenega Corporation wants a Public Affairs Officer to report to their Quantico location. Military public affairs/media relations background desirable, as is photography skills and flexibility for deployments in the field throughout the world, with little or no notice. Can also be found here, using keyword public affairs, or via ClearedJobs.net.

It’s pretty clear in our minds that the above-mentioned Smithsonian Folklife Festival Director posting falls within the public affairs domain. But what about the Director of Alumni Affairs (scroll down more than halfway) job with Strayer University? We see a job description that requires plenty of outreach, communications, social/online media and networking skills. Surely one (or dozens) of you faithful viewers fit the bill. Rosslyn location.

We mentioned Kiplinger’s Managing Editor (website operation) and Writer/Editor (special projects) earlier this month. They’ve recently added Copy Editor to the shopping list - experience with Quark and Adobe Illustrator desired, conversance in economics, policy and business issues would be a plus.

The National Governor’s Association has a desk waiting for a Director, Energy & Transportation Program. Successful candidate will establish and maintain relationships with governors’ staff, and also synthesize information and policy solutions by various government and expert sources. Hunt it down here if direct link lets you down.

Philadelphia, Freedom

I’ll give the folks at the Tax Foundation some credit for a sense of humor: Intern applications for Summer ‘09 are due on April 15. FYI, they’ll be announcing this year’s Tax Freedom Day on March 30.

Speaking of freedom – Freedom House seeks a Senior Program Officer to manage the start-up and implementation of its new International Religious Freedom Consortium. Experience in international religious freedom and/or human rights and a Master or Law degree is preferred, along with contacts with both secular and faith-based groups working on the issue.

Here’s a fairly recent (posted Mar. 13) Intern, Corporate Communications posting with AOL. Search here, via Corp. Communications/Govt. Affairs category or req # 111432BR, if direct link proves unsatisfactory. Dulles-area location.

Also from the Time-Warner empire: News Assistant, Live Production for CNN in their DC bureau. Or search DC location or req. ID 111690BR.

How about an entry-level opportunity with O’Keeffe & Co? Get your foot in the door as a Marketing & Public Relations Extern.

The Mercatus Center at George Mason University (along with its Institute for Humane Studies sibling) seek a Director of Foundations Strategy to join their fast-paced development team. Free parking and tuition covered for one GMU course per semester are part of the compensation package.

The American Institute for Architects is measuring for a new addition – a Manager, State Issues & Programs to assist state affiliates with their advocacy efforts, and much much much (see their 966 word-count job description) more. Also available from AIA: Managing Editor, Member Communications

The Association for Advanced Underwriting (life insurance) seeks Political Fundraiser to manage all aspects their political giving program and PAC. At least 5 years of combined experience as an association PAC Manager and/or Finance Director of political campaigns would be ideal.

They don’t wish to be identified, but a dynamic bipartisan lobbying and public affairs group want to get a motivated Legislative & Regulatory Research Assistant on the job pronto. Work appears focused on energy/environment issues.

Why do we bring you Ocwen Financial's call for a Senior Vice President, Business Development & Government Relations, especially given that they don’t mention DC offices? Perhaps one of you folks out there is the perfect fit to build industry partnerships with contacts at investment banks/GSEs, develop close working relationships with key congressional offices as well as state and local, and lead government relations and lobbying at all levels of government. You can also look here if previous link proves balky.

The Physician Assistant Education Association is accepting applications until Mar. 28 (unless they can’t find anyone they like) for their Government Affairs Director position. Pay level starts at $60k, but is adjustable for experience. Old Town Alexandria location.

We had to hunt around like crazy to find a link on the St. Joseph’s University website to find their HR page just to give you a chance to apply for their Assistant Vice President for Government & Community Relations (go to employment, then full-time positions). Whether the $90k-$95k salary is sufficient to make the move to Philly is up to you. Here’s an alternate link, if you can’t hunt it down using the instructions above.

Think Tank Jobs

For our industry-focused Tuesday edition, we bring back one of our most-popular models: think tank jobs (and internships, too). We welcome any additions or corrections from the groups listed here, or from organizations we may have missed.

The Nature Conservancy shows multiple positions available:

Will organize and facilitate thought leadership papers and sessions on Federal healthcare, provide SME in bids. Master's degree in Health Policy preferred.

Two recent offerings from BAE Systems (search here if direct links fail):
  • Manager of Communications (search job number 10019807 or California, Md. location). Ability to get Secret-level clearance, and experience interfacing with US Navy deemed essential.

(Don't Go Back to) Rockville

High Voltage

We close your work (or wish-you-were-working) week with a selection that, in many cases, covet energetic, speedy, well-caffeinated and even sugar-seeking types.

Microsoft may have found their Senate-focused lobbyist referenced here – they are still looking for a Federal Lobbyist/ Federal Government Affairs Manager (search DC location or job code 253775) colleague to work the House side. Extensive legislative/Hill experience is desired, of course.

The Public Justice Foundation seeks a Director of Development (note: pdf link) to plan and direct their fundraising efforts. Major gift experience, top-notch writing skills, and a personality that is warm yet energetic are among their wants. They also seek law students to serve as summer Interns (pdf again) in their DC and Oakland offices.

An international company with more than 24,000 employees in nearly 100 countries, seeks a Director of Corporate Communications for its DC office. They are aided in their search by enthusiastic-looking crew at Volt Services Group – perhaps they’ve thrown back a few Volt energy drinks.

Serco seeks a Director of Public Policy Research & Communications for their Serco Institute operation. Successful candidate will oversee research regarding the design of public service markets, the conduct of competitive procurements, and the management of contracts regarding the provision of public services by private and voluntary sector organizations.

Congressional Quarterly
would like to find an Associate Editor for CQ Healthbeat. They're looking for folks with hustle: speed, accuracy, and strong competitive instincts essential. Other editorial and admin opportunities also available, including part-time HR work.

The National Confectioners Association will pay their temporary Administrative Assistant/Coordinator $20/hour and all the candy you can eat (really!) in a 40 hour work week. Job runs through June 30.

The Safadi Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to Lebanon's development. They’re hoping to bring aboard a part-time Intern to assist with administration, grant-writing and event coordination.

Or perhaps you would rather be a Communication Intern for AMIDEAST – tracking news, developments in international education, US Executive branch policy and Congressional hearings, along with other research and admin duties.

The US Committee on International Religious Freedom is also looking for intern help this summer. Applications due Apr. 1 for:
Get your CV into the folks at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission by Apr. 6 for their Protocol Specialist opportunity. You’ll work in their Office of Congressional Affairs, and assist with events, meetings, and visits of dignitaries hosted by the Commission, in addition to admin work for the Director of Protocol. Pay range: $41k-$79k, job ID OCA-2009-0003.

Lobbying/GR outfit Rapoza Associates is seeking an experienced Community Development Professional to work with the firm’s nonprofit/philanthropic clients on housing and community development policy, program development and lobbying. Excellent writing and research skills a must.

SMI Inc. – a government relations and solutions firm with a focus on national security, energy, and research and development – looking for a Junior Associate with a strong-work-ethic/entrepreneurial bent. Duties include supporting senior staff on scheduling and logistics, industry, legislative and policy research, and business development. Congressional/association experience desirable, but they’ll consider resumes without it.

The Project Management Institute would like to add a Government Relations Specialist to the org chart. Winning hire will advocate to help grow PMI’s influence in the government/federal sector. They’re looking for at least five years of experience in GR, public affairs, or advocacy with success in broadening markets; research and development; and relationship building. Perhaps some of you will be more interested in Vice President, Brand Management or Corporate Relations Specialist postings back at the Newton Square, PA headquarters.

And finally, on this fired-up Friday – the title sounds doubly intense: Action Office, Director’s Action Group with SAIC - providing Congressional liaison, public affairs support, and collaboration with an alphabet soup of government agencies to ensure effective communication and outreach. Ironically, I found it through the not-so-intense-sounding Jobs for Geeks.
