AARP - Senior Writer/Editor

Senior writer/editor will be an integral part of the AARP's Policy, Research and International(PRI)team dedicated to maintaining and improving the quality and effectiveness of PRI’s written products and communications. As a member of PRI’s communications team, position serves as lead writer and editor for PRI and will collaborate closely with the teams within PRI to achieve success. The senior writer/editor will be responsible for managing development and production of a variety of materials including: newsletters; policy papers; web content; reports; promo/collateral materials; Board materials; and social media content.

He/she will oversee the ongoing quality assurance process for developing high standard work products and content that is relevant, impactful and strategically on message. Working with the PRI staff, the senior writer/editor will help improve the accessibility and visibility of PRI’s internal and external materials. This position reports to the VP of Strategic Initiatives and contributes to a team that works across PRI to ensure successful outreach to and engagement with many audiences.

The senior writer/editor:

· Supports and manages day-to-day implementation of strategic, proactive communications activities.
· Drafts and edits communications content (often with rapid turnaround times) to advance the PRI’s goals. (Examples include: policy reports and papers; blogs; presentations; Board materials; briefings; web and social media content.)
· Manages critical departmental writing/editing projects using skills in information design to produce key deliverables such as: branding, standards and style guides; promotional and outreach materials.
· Assists PRI staff members as they develop creative story-telling ideas and optimize internal and external channels for promotion of their policy and research publications. Works with staff to develop creative content for headlines, alerts to promote releases and events, and other content.
· Provides communications-related technical assistance to PRI staff members; particularly, writing expertise and coaching, as appropriate.
· Writes, edits and manages PRI’s departmental materials such as newsletters targeted to internal and external stakeholders.
· Plays a lead role in writing and managing an array of content online and in print, in coordination with PRI team members.
· Oversees and manages the work of our external editing vendors to ensure optimal quality and performance.
· Works as part of a team to develop new channel opportunities to create greater reach and awareness.
· Uses knowledge and experience to create successful policy products, communications and outreach materials.
· Maintains consistency in PRI’s branding, standards and style.
· Demonstrates AARP leadership behaviors in all interactions.

WORK/EDUCATION EXPERIENCE

· Completion of a bachelor’s degree in English, journalism or related field and at least 5-8 years of experience of writing/editing in a professional setting. Knowledge about aging policy or journalism experience in related areas is a plus.
· Possess professional-quality writing/copyediting skills and excellent oral communication skills.
· Experience working with a variety of communications channels including social media; mass media; print media; events; etc.
· Project management experience in a communications setting.
· Demonstrated ability to work effectively with all levels and across multiple departments.
· Ability to adhere to tight deadlines and work accurately in a fast-paced environment.
· Experience working with social media including Twitter, Facebook & Pinterest.
· Advanced proficiency in Word, PowerPoint, and Excel and electronic communications; Graphic design skills a plus.
· Strong client service orientation.
· Ability to take initiative, willingness to learn, and be flexible.
· Positive, collaborative & proactive attitude.

Responsibilities include:

In conjunction with VP and AT&T marketing director, develop and implement a complete, fully integrated digital marketing plan to meet AT&T wireless conversion goals to include:
1. Develop/implement integrated marketing campaigns with digital emphasis targeting union members who are current AT&T wireless customers and encourage members to switch from other carriers. Channels include email, mobile, video, social media and targeted online advertising.
2. Maintain, test and optimize compelling and effective AT&T landing pages and content for web pages on UP site, blog and social media.
3. Track/optimize online funnels to deliver leads and conversions for AT&T program.
4. Enhance SEO & paid search efforts.
5. Work with union partners to increase key promotions of AT&T through their major digital communications channels.
6. Be part of the creative team that develops and implements innovative, robust digital outreach techniques to reach target audiences.
7. Manage appropriate digital consultants/vendors.
8. Meet or exceed all AT&T web-related metrics, including AT&T migrations to the Union Plus discount program, coupon downloads & shop online traffic/conversions.
9. Responsible for other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

1. Knowledge of digital marketing and at least 2 years working understanding of all facets of digital communications channels, including strategies, mobile, design, analytics & measurement.
2. 2+ years experience with digital ad campaigns, including site retargeting and Facebook advertising.
3. Experience with email design, messaging, delivery strategy/tactics and analytics.
4. Superior communications skills.
5. Excellent project management and scheduling skills, including ability to manage vendors/consultants.
6. Understanding of how to measure success with clear metrics.
7. Understanding of e-commerce and marketing related to wireless carrier plans.
8. Understanding of emerging digital technologies and industry trends.
9. Strong and fast writer with proven success writing for online/email audience.
10. Demonstrated organizational skills; ability to work independently and in a team; juggle multiple priority tasks quickly and without errors; solve problems; creative; take initiative; meet deadlines and set priorities.
11. Bachelors degree in PR, Advertising, Journalism, Communications, Marketing or related field; Masters a plus.
12. Union experience & familiarity with Exact Target/Salesforce Marketing Cloud email platform a plus.
