All Apologies

We're happy to be back with our usual editorial offerings and great public affairs and communications gigs – but we're also miffed that we dropped the ball, screwed the pooch, and flushed the headband by missing a very cool job for almost a month. WETA is seeking an Associate Producer for its Peabody Award-winning Washington Week program. Demonstrated ability to make strong editorial judgment regarding current events, U.S. politics, geopolitics, history, and government/political process and national news periodicals is among their requirements for the job, along with the ability to work Friday evenings.

We goofed. We don’t expect to bring you every single public affairs job out there – but we pride ourselves on finding and flacking the really neat ones available. So how did we miss this month-old posting for Director of Regional Outreach for California (search under Development & Fundraising category) with Georgetown University for so long? You’ll be based out of L.A., of course – and work mainly with regionally oriented professional interest groups, including the Georgetown Entertainment & Media Alliance, a 2,000 person network of Georgetown alumni, parents, and friends in the entertainment and media industries. It all sounds infinitely cool; please send us a picture of you in front of the Hollywood sign if you get the job.

The Defense Department is looking for a Foreign Affairs Specialist though the Federal Career Intern Program – a two-year posting that may lead to a permanent position. Your pay will fall somewhere in the broad range of $26-$64k – job ID WA240735-GC, apply by Apr. 30.

The Cato Institute has an opening for a Staff Writer to report on Cato events for several publications, write articles about books and events for Cato Policy Report, and undertake other editorial, writing and research assignments. Strong writing ability and a commitment to liberty and limited government are quite naturally expected.

April 30 is a big day for the HR department at the Education Forum Foundation – that’s when applications are due for these opportunities (scroll down to find):
If you search for DC jobs posted Mar. 30 or later with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, you’ll see their fresh calls for a Public Policy Analyst, Economic Policy (Domestic & Int’l) and also a Senior Policy Officer, Public Finance. Lots of excellent Seattle-based opportunities of recent vintage are also available, as usual.

The IRIS Center, University of Maryland has an opportunity for a Grant & Proposal Coordinator. A six-month commitment is all they’re promising, but perhaps you can make them fall in love with you in 180 days time. Their work involves the study and support of economic growth and democratic development in poor and transition countries.

Finally, you can cash in on your youthful indiscretions as a notorious tattletale. The Government Accountability Projectwww.whistleblower.org – promotes government and corporate accountability, principally by advancing protections for employees and others who blow the whistle on unlawful conduct. They’re in search of a Homeland Security Counsel for client and policy work related to torture, illegal surveillance, excessive government secrecy, and politically repressive discrimination. Two year term.

Jumpstart pairs nearly 4,000 trained adult mentors with underserved preschoolers for a full school year, helping children develop the language, literacy, and social skills they’ll need to thrive in kindergarten and beyond. How about signing on as their Vice President of Government Relations? Successful candidate will drive Jumpstart’s public policy efforts with the primary goal of increasing access to government resources and funding.

An unnamed veterans affairs nonprofit is recruiting a Policy Director for a broad-based menu of legislative and advocacy duties and responsibilities. They quite reasonably ask that you have a thorough understanding of military and veterans’ issues, along with other public policy-related experience and skill-sets.

Here’s another one from the Craigslist treasure trove: the Salvation Army seeks resumes for their next Director of Public Relations – pay range is $63k-$75k. Ability to build and drive media coverage is among their principal wants for the job.

Tellenger, a full-service IT consulting firm requires not one but two Social Media and Web 2.0 Experts (one senior, one mid-level) to be full-time, onsite consultants to the government to write reports and point of view documents about how the latest web technologies can be applied to the government sector. Perhaps you could tell them you found the job through some random public affairs jobs blog – that’s gotta be a plus, right?

Friendship Public Charter School may be on the hunt for a Director of Communications/Publications – although I could not confirm this via their own careers page.
