InterAction - Legislative Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs
ReplyDeleteInterAction seeks a Legislative Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs to facilitate advocacy by our humanitarian working groups. The position coordinates the advocacy messaging and strategy of the relevant working groups and helps to build and maintain relationships with key Congressional and administration staff.
The Legislative Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs will be part of InterAction’s Public Policy Team, working closely with and reporting to the Senior Director of Public Policy. S/he will also work closely with the Humanitarian Policy and Practice Team to assist and coordinate the working groups’ advocacy efforts.
Duties will include:
-- Represent InterAction on a range of issues including refugees and/or internally displaced persons, emergency response, post-conflict reconstruction, recovery, civil-military relations and humanitarian aid reform to Congress and the administration;
-- Facilitate and build consensus among InterAction members behind an advocacy strategy and common messaging for InterAction’s humanitarian working groups, including writing and editing policy documents, organizing briefings and coordinating sign-on letters, informed by best practices in the field;
-- Report to working groups at bi-weekly or monthly meetings on pertinent hearings and legislative developments, including budget, appropriations, authorization bills and other legislation;
-- Track and analyze legislation and other congressional activities related to working group interest;
-- Track pertinent policy developments related to working group interests; stay abreast of developments in the field;
-- Establish and maintain relationships with working group participants; respond to informational inquiries from InterAction members;
-- Build and maintain relationships with members of the administration, Congress, and strategic partners;
-- Coordinate congressional relationships and advocacy efforts with the rest of the Public Policy Unit, while liaising closely with the Humanitarian Policy and Practice Unit;
-- Support InterAction’s broad policy objectives within the context of budget/appropriations, foreign assistance reform, the Busan Partnership for Effective Development Cooperation, and the Millennium Development Goals; and
QUALIFICATIONS:
-- Highly organized, team player, motivated, and articulate with excellent inter-personal communication and writing skills;
-- A least a bachelor’s degree with two to five years of Congressional work experience and/or experience in legislative advocacy for a non-profit organization;
-- Experience/knowledge with humanitarian and/or international development issues;
-- The ability to stay calm and poised under pressure, remain focused in a rapidly changing environment and responsive to new needs of members;
-- Demonstrated initiative to solve problems with high energy and a positive attitude
