The Federal Affairs Office represents Mayor Bloomberg and the City of New York to the Federal Government, carrying out the legislative agenda and other interests important to the City. Under the direction of the Director, the intern will assist with legislative research and other administrative responsibilities.

The term of the intern mirrors college semester schedules throughout the school year and is flexible. We are currently seeking an individual who is available between the hours of 9am to 5pm Monday through Friday; however, legislative activity and other job duties may require extended hours and attendance at early morning or evening meetings. The internship may be negotiated to extend beyond the regular session. Semester internships are highly competitive. An interest in and ties to New York City are crucial.

Duties include: attending legislative committee meetings and hearings; assisting staff in preparing, testifying, researching and tracking legislation introduced and of impact to New York City; acting as a liaison to congressional staff; and communicating with City officials on legislative activity. The intern will be required to prepare written materials (e.g. fact sheets, legislative summaries, bulletins and weekly bill status report) and will be called upon to handle basic research and update contact lists. The intern will also have the opportunity to assist in updating the office newsletter regarding legislative information and other pertinent bulletins. Please note: interns will be asked to help staff the Mayor and other City officials when they work in Washington DC. Interns will report to a professional working environment, where they are assigned a desk, and are provided with a City email address. While the internship is unpaid, a work visit to NYC may be included in the internship.

Qualifications: This position requires strong oral and written communication skills, organizational proficiency, basic research, computer fluency, and familiarity with the internet. The intern will be expected to work independently. Preference will be given to applicants with experience and demonstrated interest or academic studies in public administration and the political process. Both undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply.

Application Procedure: To apply, please send a cover letter and resume to:BigAppleDCIntern@cityhall.nyc.gov. We are looking to fill the position ASAP.
