A Democratic Council member in a leadership position of a major local jurisdiction in the Washington, D.C. Metro Area seeks a highly motivated professional to serve as Communications Director.
The Communications Director will:
-- Collaborate with the Chief of Staff to develop and implement a communications strategy;
-- Develop and maintain effective relationships with key members of traditional media and new media outlets;
-- Develop and implement earned media outreach;
-- Draft press releases, op-eds, and letters to the editor;
-- Draft speeches and talking points for Council member;
-- Write, edit and send newsletters, e-newsletters, and mass email messages;
-- Write and edit complete, thorough and accurate correspondence to constituents;
-- Regularly update website, blog and Facebook/Twitter account;
-- Staff the Council member at events;
-- Attend meetings or events related to assigned areas of responsibility and provide written summary notes for major issues;
-- Conduct legislative research and monitor legislative committees;
-- Complete special projects.
Qualifications and Experience
Candidates should enjoy working in a fast-paced, collaborative office environment and be committed to progressive values. In addition, they should have the following:
-- Bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years of experience responsible for political/government/advocacy communications;
-- A professional background in media relations or a related field with demonstrated ability to forge and maintain relationships with journalists;
-- Experience in constituent services or customer relations;
-- Excellent and efficient writing ability;
-- Solid follow-through and attention to detail;
-- Interest in local policy issues;
-- Knowledge of Constant Contact or other e-marketing tools and platforms;
-- Experience with HTML and other web-based content management systems a plus;
-- Experience in local, state, or federal government a plus.
