POSITION SUMMARY
The Manager of Public Relations will be responsible for crafting and implementing strategies to raise the profile and increase the influence of the Alliance for Strong Families and Communities nationally. The PR Manager will report to the SVP for Marketing and Philanthropy but will be located in the Alliance’s Washington DC headquarters and embedded within the Public Policy and Advocacy function. The Manager of Public Relations will be expected to work with Alliance leaders to craft consistent and compelling messages and framing, respond proactively and reactively to media developments, and identify and secure speaking engagements and other opportunities for Alliance leaders and network members to share expertise and exercise influence with key external audiences.
--Work closely with the Public Policy and Advocacy team to develop, implement and support effective advocacy campaigns and strategies
--Function as an integral member of the Marketing and Communications team, collaborating daily with teammates to ensure consistency of messaging and integration of activity and resources between the Headquarters and the National Operations Center
--Help craft and disseminate key strategic messages in support of Alliance goals
--Provide strategic guidance on the development and use of communications resources and strategies
--Identify and secure opportunities for Alliance leaders to speak, testify, or otherwise share expertise and exercise influence
--Monitor and respond to press opportunities and challenges
--Build cooperative relationships with PR leaders throughout the Alliance’s member network
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university with demonstrated interest and involvement in our policy areas. Relevant advanced degree helpful, but not required. Two to five years of public relations, communications, or public affairs experience, ideally in service of related goals and issues. Demonstrated knowledge of policymaking and political process and understanding of the nonprofit/human services sector necessary. Ability and willingness to work under pressure and adapt to sometimes rapidly changing circumstances. Experience working with press on and off the record, both proactively and reactively. Successful candidate will have strong writing, research and computer skills (Microsoft applications software), and familiarity with using social media to maximize reach and mission.
Travel is expected, periodically to average about 15% (3-4 days per month).
