The Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA) is seeking a person with strong advocacy, writing, research & admin experience to serve as Policy and Advocacy Coordinator. LCLAA is the leading national Latino labor organization that focuses on the major issues affecting the Latino community and the nation as a whole.
Position will support LCLAA in implementing its policy priorities, which focus on addressing critical issues that affect the Latino community including civic engagement, collective bargaining, immigration reform, economic empowerment, education, health care, government accountability, and civil rights.
Responsibilities
• Draft communications on a variety of policy issues, including press releases, op-eds, letters, emails, and other statements.
• Draft memos and background/supporting materials.
• Help provide tools and resources for chapters.
• Prepare talking points for LCLAA leaders/members advocating on behalf of the organization at executive luncheons, panels, galas, and other national conventions or conferences.
• Assist in the writing & development of fundraising & program reports.
• Create/distribute monthly membership e-newsletter.
• Coordinate and work on LCLAA’s 2016 Civic Engagement campaign. This includes, helping chapters with voter registration, voter education, and GOTV/Voter protection efforts.
• Coordinate and prepare for LCLAA board meetings and yearly conferences/conventions—including drafting invitations, preparing agenda items, and assisting in related duties.
• Develop relationships with labor unions, policy leaders, government agency staff, and community groups.
• Develop campaign strategies and take the lead on related coalition-building under the directive of the Executive Director.
• Develop/maintain expertise in labor issues and other policy issues affecting job quality for Latino working families.
• Attend hearings and briefings related to legislative priorities and represent LCLAA at conferences, meetings and other related events.
• Participate in labor and Latino coalition meetings to stay abreast of policy and advocacy issues and assist the Executive Director in preparing for such meetings.
• Serve as the media contact for the Executive Director.
• Work with the Executive Director on meetings with government agencies, elected officials, and community organizations to address policy concerns.
• Coordinate the development and maintenance of website and social media platforms.
• Admin duties as needed.
Education/Training
• Bachelor’s degree, with background in communications and/or public policy & labor unions, is preferred.
Qualifications
• Minimum 3 years of work experience preferably with a Latino organization, labor union or electoral campaign.
• Demonstrated commitment to and understanding of issues faced by the Latino community & labor union members.
• Strong writing skills – particularly an ability to write press statements and opinion pieces on a variety of policy issues within a limited timeframe.
• Ability to work with diverse audiences, including labor union leadership, elected officials, community organizations, and advocates.
• Background in media/communications highly desired.
• Must be highly organized, willing to undertake administrative activities, and be able to manage implementation of multiple projects at once.
• Demonstrated ability to take initiative and successfully complete projects.
