Duke in DC, Duke University’s administrative and outreach center in Washington, DC, seeks a program specialist to provide administrative support to the Associate Director of Government Relations, and perform duties of a complex nature in support of the daily operations and programs of the office. In addition, the program specialist will be the primary manager of information dissemination to Duke constituencies in Washington and Durham.
Internal audiences include University officers, deans, faculty, other administrators, students, and alumni. External audiences include elected and appointed federal officials, the media, and other policy professionals.
Work Performed
Government Relations
--Assist the Associate Director and Office of Government Relations staff in monitoring and analysis of current and prospective issues in federal relations, which affect Duke University.
--Assist the Associate Director in developing and maintaining relationships with media representatives based in Washington, Capitol Hill staff, think tanks, and others policy professionals.
--Support Government Relations staff with the identification, tracking, and analyses of federal policy issues that impact Duke.
--Provide logistical and staff support to faculty testifying on Capitol Hill or otherwise speaking publically in Washington, DC.
Communications
--Cover events, briefings, and other activities in Washington, including writing stories, taking photos and video, and reporting back to campus news offices.
--Work in close coordination with the Office of News and Communications to support university wide communications efforts relevant to Duke in DC’s mission.
--Write bi-weekly blog posts and two regular office e-newsletters.
--Manage social media presence for Duke in DC.

Skills/Requirements:
--Work requires the ability to perform creative writing and related activities such as conducting interviews and research, and copy editing normally acquired through attainment of a bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Public Policy, or a related discipline.
--Work requires 2-4 years of directly related writing experience.
--Work requires proficiency with website editing and database management.
--Work requires administrative and events experience necessary to oversee office functions related to office management, special events, communications, and budgetary/accounting activities.
--Strong research and writing skills
--Observant to public policy issues
