ReplyDeleteDC Councilmember Charles Allen is seeking a Communications Director to lead media relations and outreach efforts, develop and direct a strategic communications plan, and manage and operate online presence and social media strategy. The first-term Councilmember is seeking a partner in crafting a communications strategy to advance his policy agenda, work on behalf of Ward 6 neighborhoods, and effectively support his legislative work on the Council. The Director will work closely with the Councilmember, Chief of Staff, and policy team to develop and implement communications and media strategies, and will lead the development of written, graphic, and electronic communications.
Responsibilities:
The primary responsibilities for the Communications Director will be to:
--Lead the creation of a communications plan and strategy, in partnership with the Councilmember and senior staff, to successfully frame and advance legislative and community-based priorities.
--Implement effective communications strategy to broaden reach, response, and exposure throughout Ward 6; and to continue building responsiveness to residents’ concerns.
--Develop and manage a press strategy as well as day-to-day media relations for the Councilmember and the Committee to be chaired by the Councilmember.
--Increase Councilmember’s online presence and responsiveness by creating and updating website content, directing social media strategy and content, and managing photography and digital media creation and utilization.
--Work with Councilmember and staff to produce bi-weekly e-newsletters and bi-annual print newsletters for constituents and supporters ¾ directing strategy, generating content in collaboration with staff, overseeing process with attention to timeline, and distribution using office CMS system and vendors.
--Generate press materials including but not limited to press releases, one-pagers, infographics, Q&As, and web copy.
--Support Councilmember, Chief of Staff, and Committee in preparation of presentations and collateral materials for public meetings, press conferences, speaking engagements, hearings, and community events.
--Other tasks as assigned.
Qualifications:
--Excellent communications skills: written, verbal, and online.
--Team player with ability to balance multiple projects independently.
--Passion for public service and experience in public policy.
--Demonstrated experience in multi-tasking, prioritizing, and meeting expectations, goals, and deadlines.
--Experience with online publishing and website CMS; experience with the NationBuilder platform preferred but not required.
--Proficiency with Microsoft Office and graphic design software such as Adobe Creative Suite.
--Excellent administrative, organizational, and time management skills, planning abilities, and attention to detail.
--Three years minimum relevant experience.
--District of Columbia residency within six months of hiring date.
Councilmember Charles Allen is a progressive Democrat who will assume the chairmanship of a new standing Council Committee in January 2017 to provide leadership and oversight of select DC government agencies. Councilmember Allen has successfully moved several significant pieces of legislation and launched multiple initiatives in his first two years on the Council. He is seeking an individual who can quickly become a partner and member of a highly functioning team that is focused on delivering reforms and results for Ward 6 and the District of Columbia. Position requires identifying key legislative issues of importance to the ready mixed concrete industry and engaging and educating federal officials to seek beneficial issue outcomes. Specific issue areas include, but are not limited to, transportation, environment, safety, labor and building standards. The position is highly focused on direct issue advocacy with decision makers and greater relationship building among other industry representatives, and Congressional members and their staff. The position is responsible for recommending and implementing association and industry issue positions and policies. As well, the position is responsible for developing and implementing strategies for issue advocacy and grassroots management.
Primary duties and responsibilities, but not limited to:
• Monitoring, attending and reporting on hearings;
• Reading, writing and issue analysis;
• Updating and educating association membership and decision makers;
• Drafting congressional testimony, issue papers, weekly and monthly periodicals, grassroots letters, Legislative and Executive Branch communications, membership issue alerts, updates and presentations;

Position requires:
• Some association travel;
• Compliance with Lobbying Disclosure Act rules and regulations; and
• Knowledge of Federal Election Commission (FEC) regulation of PAC administration.

Summary
ACNM’s Communications Department is seeking an energetic intern interested in furthering her or his communications skills in this growing and dynamic member association of primarily nurse-midwives. From traditional media relations and social media to publication development and communications campaigns, ACNM’s Communications Department offers a variety of opportunities to learn about communicating effectively both internally with our membership and externally with a variety of stakeholders from media and consumers to health care industry partners.
The Director of Communications will work with selected intern to tailor the experience to his or her professional interests. The intern will be supervised by members of the Communications Department and report directly to the Director. Intern’s hours and days are negotiable for a total of 12-15 hours per week in the Silver Spring, MD office.
Although ACNM is not authorized to confer academic credit, this internship experience is designed to allow the intern to qualify for academic credit, and ACNM is prepared to cooperate with academic departments so that the internship experience merits academic credit.
This internship experience includes the following educational activities, goals, and responsibilities:
--Learning about midwife-led care and its important role in providing health care to women
--Communicating with ACNM members around the country
--Engaging in ACNM’s consumer outreach campaign, Our Moment of Truth, to educate women about their health care options, particularly midwife-led care
--Improving writing and editing skills in a variety of formats, including press releases and newsletters
--Conducting research on topics related to ACNM activities
--Enhancing and developing social media and other online skills, including media monitoring software, website editing, database management, blogging

Intern Qualifications
Intern candidates must be studying communications, journalism, social media and/or public relations, have good organizational skills and be able to adapt to varying assignments and deadlines. A detail-oriented self-starter is ideal. Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite along with excellent verbal/written communication skills is required. Familiarity with social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Pinterest is desired. Strong writing and research skills are essential. Knowledge of health care issues is desirable. Interest in or experience with content management systems is helpful.
