In collaboration with the AALU’s Government Affairs team, volunteer leaders, and industry partners, the Assistant Director, Legislative Affairs will be responsible for helping AALU communicate and advocate on an array of tax, retirement, and financial services policy challenges facing our member agents and the broader life insurance community. We are looking to bring aboard a highly capable individual who can deftly articulate the value of life insurance products and our industry to external audiences, including policymakers, Hill staff, and other influencers throughout Washington.
Among the key responsibilities for the Assistant Director, Legislative Affairs, will be to:
• Provide regular written reports and oral presentations on AALU issues and advocacy activities to both internal and external audiences, including talking points, position papers, memos, and related analyses, in meetings and on calls.
• Contribute to the development and execution of a diverse set of Government Affairs department projects and organizational events (AALU Annual Meeting, advocacy fly-ins, etc.), as required.
• Provide input on the formulation of policy positions and advocacy strategies on life insurance product tax treatment, estate tax, retirement security, and regulatory barriers to life insurance distribution.
• Develop, manage, and leverage relationships with government officials, industry partners and trades, outside counsel, and organizational leadership to achieve success on advocacy priorities.
• Direct lobbying of Members of Congress and their staffs, relevant Committee professional staff, as well as Executive Branch and regulatory agencies, as appropriate.
• Contribute to specific revenue-generating initiatives, as needed.
Professional Experience/Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
• 5-7 years of experience in federal legislative affairs, preferably in the areas of tax, retirement, financial services, and/or broad-based economic policy issues.
• Strong written and verbal communications ability, including the ability to present complex policy and marketplace issues in a concise and understandable manner to broad array of audiences.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the legislative and regulatory processes at the federal level, with a strong understanding of political dynamics and context.
• Established relationships with House and Senate tax writing, financial services, and/or leadership staff and policymakers.
• Proven analytical, strategic thinking, and problem solving ability.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and team-oriented, collaborative approach.
• Highly organized, detail-oriented, with ability to multi-task effectively.
• Self-starter with a creative, results-oriented mindset, and record of professional success.
• Experience within the life insurance industry and/or with life insurance-related policy issues.
Education:
An undergraduate degree is required. Law degree (J.D.) or other advanced degree (M.P.P., M.P.A, etc.) would be desirable.
