ReplyDeleteThe Office of Congressman Gene Green (D-TX-29) is seeking interns interested in gaining hands-on experience in a congressional office. In our Washington office, interns are able to actively observe the legislative process while participating in the administrative operations of a congressional office.
Responsibilities will consist of administrative, communications, and legislative support tasks, including but not limited to:
--Coordinating tours for constituents
--Guiding tours of the U.S. Capitol
--Researching legislative issues and writing constituent response letters
--Attending hearings and briefings on behalf of staff as requested
--Assisting with creating graphics and other social media tasks
--Performing general office and administrative duties and assisting with front office management and errands
--Responding to constituent inquiries
--Processing flag requests
--Inputting and organizing constituent phone calls and messages
--Mail distribution
Although congressional interns are unpaid, they are considered an important part of the office. They are encouraged to expand their knowledge about public policy and the legislative process via attending hearings, off-Hill lectures, briefings, receptions, and Hill events and meetings according to their interests. To enable interns to better learn about work on Capitol Hill and to participate in meetings, the member’s daily calendar is made available to them. They are also welcome to ask legislative staff for permission to sit in on industry or staff-level meetings. Efforts are made to tailor assignments to the skills, interests, and goals of the intern, but interns are encouraged to independently pursue opportunities and work of interest to them as well.
Interns are supervised by the Staff Assistant. They are expected to work with the other intern/s and the Staff Assistant cooperatively to manage the front office, and to communicate their progress on tasks, their whereabouts when out of the office on work-related errands, and to communicate expected absences to the Staff Assistant well in advance.
Qualified candidates should have a strong interest in politics and current events, office experience, excellent writing and communication skills, attention to detail, initiative, and the ability to learn quickly and work in a fast paced environment. Texas ties are preferred but not required.
Hours are 9:00-6:00, Monday-Thursday, and 9:00-4:00 on Fridays.
