  1. UpShift Strategies - Strategist

    UpShift Strategies is seeking a smart and creative strategist to help us build up our growing team of communications experts to fight for progressive causes.

    UpShift Strategies helps progressive organizations develop messages and strategies that break through, make an impact and create change.

    Our team has 30+ years of experience executing high-profile strategic communications campaigns. We create winning messaging and combine it with traditional and digital marketing, online organizing, training and earned media. With our considerable experience evaluating, training and improving communications departments, we make sure our clients stand out from the crowd, avoiding out-of-date or cookie-cutter tactics. We only work with clients and issues we passionately believe in and enjoy taking on challenging issues.

    About You

    We’re looking for a new addition to the team with one to three years of experience who will complement the skill set we’ve already assembled. Specifically, we’re looking for someone who is:
    --Well-organized – when dealing with multiple clients and projects at one time, you’ll need to meet deadlines and make sure client projects and tasks stays on track;
    --Strategic thinker – keeping in mind the goals of what our clients are doing rather than just communicating for the sake of it;
    --A strong writer and editor – understanding of AP style a plus, but we’re open to people on either side of the Oxford comma debate;
    --Flexible and resourceful – we work for a variety of clients in myriad ways, and we’ll need you to jump in, from helping to craft strategy to scheduling calls;
    --Detail-oriented – even when busy and juggling different projects;
    --Motivated – both for your work and the causes we all believe in;
    --Confident –we want a person who is able to share your perspective and smart ideas internally as well as with our clients on calls, in meetings and at trainings;
    --Able to have a laugh – because we all need a good sense of humor these days; and
    --Understanding of basic software, including MS Office (including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint), Google products (Google Drive, Google Ads, Google Analytics), Dropbox and internet research tools, particularly Cision.

    Not required, but if you have experience with the following, it’s an extra bonus:
    --Digital strategy – social media, online ads and email are a critical component of any communications these days, so any experience you have online will be especially helpful;
    --Graphic design – InDesign, Canva, Word, we’ll take it!
    --Languages – particularly Spanish but others can be helpful as well; and
    -- Experience – in a fast-paced nonprofit, PR firm or political organization.

    What You’ll Do

    Your work will vary quite a bit and evolve over time – hence the flexibility requirement – but generally you can expect to:
    --Manage projects, building timelines and tracking tasks to make sure we stay on top of deadlines and new opportunities that may arise;
    --Draft materials, from taking a first pass at memos and messaging to developing press releases, agendas and meeting takeaways;
    --Conduct research into media coverage, messaging and other materials to analyze our clients’ work and the communications landscapes in which they operate;
    --Build media lists and pitch journalists;
    --Monitor opportunities and provide recommendations – in today’s landscape every day is a whole news cycle, so we’ll count on you to keep up and provide input as to how your clients can take advantage;
    --Connect with clients, offer advice and answer questions as appropriate;
    --Copy edit everything from research briefs and proposals to 1-page memos; and
    --Cover general project admin, including scheduling, organizing documents & taking notes.
