The Press Secretary will plan and pitch press opportunities, independently manage press relationships, respond to press inquiries, serve as an on-the-record spokesperson, and assist in policy development as communications strategy. The Press Secretary will also manage rapid response efforts, press advisories, releases and talking points, and will help to develop and execute overall messaging strategies.
Additional responsibilities include managing social media channels, creating digital assets such as graphics and video, growing the Congressman’s digital media presence, and further developing the Congressman’s online voice. Ideal candidates will have strong written and oral communication skills, be able to develop an understanding of issues important to the Congressman and the Democratic Caucus, be able to work demanding hours in a fast-paced environment, take initiative and display creativity, work well with a team and multi-task, be detail oriented and organized, and have a positive attitude and a sense of humor.
2+ years of prior communications or media relations experience is required. Maryland ties, previous congressional or campaign work, on-the-record experience, and photography and graphic design skills are preferred. Prior experience working with cable news booking producers is a plus.
Interested applicants should submit a cover letter describing their fit for the role, resume and, if available, 1 – 2 short writing or multimedia samples to md.jobposting@mail.house.gov with “Press Secretary” in the subject line.
