The Office of the Director in the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health, is seeking a Director, Office of Communications and Legislative Activities. The Plasma Protein Therapeutics Association seeks a State Affairs Manager to coordinate health policy initiatives and work with on advocacy efforts for biotech industry. Five-plus years experience in Medicaid and health care reimbursement policy desired. PPTA is based in Annapolis.

The National Governors Association would like to hire a Senior Legislative Associate to lead their advocacy efforts involving criminal justice, homeland security and the National Guard. State/federal government experience, especially of the Capitol Hill variety, is quite sensibly desired. PBS is looking for a Corporate Communications Coordinator to answer viewer inquiries (electronic, mail, phone), moderate a viewer discussion board, and perform other related tasks for the Viewer Services Dept. The American Society of Landscape Architects seeks a new Public Relations Coordinator to work with media and support PR efforts of local chapters. Two years of PR–related experience required for consideration.

The Bethesda-based Association for Financial Professionals is in the market for a Director, Communications to drive content for AFP's magazines, web sites, videos and newsletters. Willingness to develop new media opportunities is particularly referenced in description. Finance industry expertise strongly preferred.

A little outside our usual job category box is the position of Studio Manager at Widemeyer Communications. Successful applicant will supervise project production talent including developers, production artists, mechanical artists and proofreaders and also facilitate communication between studio/creative and account/production groups.

The Partnership for Prevention works to increase resources and incentives for disease prevention through public-private collaboration. Some unknown national association – with the assistance of the Ford Agency - is trolling the waters for a Policy Manager to monitor state and local issues, assist members and write legislative reports/briefs/etc. Prior GR/public affairs experience a plus (but not mandatory, I suppose)

The National Association of State Directors of Career Technical Education Consortium – wow, what a name – has a slot for a Public Policy Manager to track, analyze, and influence Federal legislation. Bonus points for candidates with experience with “NCLB [No Child Left Behind], Workforce Investment Act and/or the education authorizing committees of Congress.” Apply by Nov. 14 or you’ll be left behind.

Tired of the K Street grind? Can’t stand another night on the fundraising circuit? Think you would look good in the tweed jacket with patched elbows? California Dreamin'

The National Association of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies seeks a Director of Government Affairs to advance NACCRRA’s interests before Congress, the federal agencies and other organizations. A particular emphasis on Senate Finance Committee and House Ways and Means Committee issues is noted in the description of duties, so some experience with these bodies would surely help prospective candidates.

Would you be safe and warm now, if you were in L.A.? You might be if you were pulling down somewhere between $160k - $244k as Director of Intergovernmental and External Relations for the County of Los Angeles. Winning candidate will represent and advocate for L.A. County before Congress, California legislature and other state/federal entities – while managing offices in Sacramento and Washington, as well. Position has been open since Oct. 7, so drop that last-minute campaign work and get to it.

Ovation Pharmaceuticals bills itself as specializing in developing drugs for severely ill patients with unmet medical needs. They are in the market for a Vice President, Government Affairs to lead overall GR strategy at the state and federal level and represent the company before federal and/or state legislative and regulatory groups, as well as PhRMA and other biopharmaceutical trade associations.

AIPAC has a position for a Senior Analyst/Deputy Director of Policy and Government Affairs to help develop mid- and long-range policy initiatives to help maintain U.S. support for Israel. A minimum of seven years of government/academic experience, along with a graduate degree, are part of the qualifications list.

The American Bankers Association has a near-entry level job (two years experience) for a Program Manager to work in their grassroots advocacy operation. The PM will manage and operate their grassroots database and also deploy web-content. Accordingly, a measure of computer skills are required, but all you kids have that these days, right?

How Did I Get Here?

The British Embassy seeks a Senior Press Officer to assist the Deputy Press Secretary in overseeing media relations. The successful applicant will pro-actively ensure coverage of the British Government's foreign and domestic policies to U.S. media audiences. At least two years media experience dealing with foreign policy, government or politics, at a national/international level is required. U.S. citizens, U.S. green card holders, or “A” visa holders may apply.

The American Psychological Association has their minds set on hiring a junior Information Architect/User Experience Designer to assist with their website redesign and more. Website usability and usage analysis appear to be the primary areas of responsibility. Cool thing about the APA website – when you type in a bad/expired link, they posit the existential question: “how did I get here?” Please keep that feature in place if you get the job.

The Public Relations Professional at the American Society of Interior Designers responsible for the strategic communications and media relations of the Society. They’re looking for someone “fluid with exceptional written, verbal, relationship and overall communication skills.”

ProLiteracy champions the power of literacy to improve the lives of adults and their families, communities, and societies. They need a DC-based Director of Public Policy and Government Affairs to manage advocacy issues, representing the group before Congress, federal policymakers and other organizations.

Metro (aka the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority) has doors opening on the right for a Government Relations Officer (note: you’ll have to search further within link). . Eight years of experience in government and/or government relations and the ability to address sensitive issues at the Federal, state or local level are required. Job closes Nov. 28, pay range is $80k-$120k.

Fleishman-Hillard has an immediate opening for a Hispanic Outreach Specialist for work on one of the firm’s largest accounts related to technology and United States immigration and border security issues. Fluency in English and Spanish and a strong understanding of Hispanic culture and community are required, along with 2-5 years of relevant experience.

The nice folks at the American Physical Therapy Association need someone to manage federal/state government affairs, payment policy and grassroots. The Vice President, Government and Payment Advocacy will also participate in senior staff meetings, oversee the PAC, and write for association publications.

Stateside Associates has openings for Legislative Associates to research state legislation and politics for corporate and association clients. State legislative staff experience is a must supporting major corporations and associations in their state lobbying efforts. Starting salary is in mid-high $30k area; benefits include beverages, seated massages and hockey tix.

PR stalwart Ketchum has a spot open for a Vice President, Public Affairs to lead and supervise various account teams and staff. Developing additional revenue opportunities is also part of the equation, of course.

Kegger !!!

The American Society of Civil Engineers seeks a Director of State Government Relations to lead state level advocacy efforts on issues such as licensing, transportation and infrastructure.

Do you long for your carefree college days? Unfortunately, that’s probably not exactly what you’ll experience if you’re tapped as Director, Regulatory Affairs for the College of American Pathologists. Instead, you will lead a team working ensure favorable public policies and regulations affecting pathology, laboratory medicine and patient safety in the laboratory setting. A long list of benefits includes comprehensive insurance coverage, retirement plans, flexible hours – but no mention of kegs on Fridays.

No time to wait – the Council for Exceptional Children started reviewing applications on Oct. 20 for their Senior Director for Communications and Public Relations (note: pdf link). Well, you can relax a little; the job was posted Oct. 17. Winning candidate will be in charge of strategic communications initiatives/activities, including messaging, website and media relations.

Two spots open at the National Association of Truck Stop Operators: Public Affairs Coordinator and Executive Assistant. They’re looking for a “self-starter with some experience in communications, media or government affairs” for the Coordinator, while the EA should be “savvy and experienced.”

The Digital Media Association’s membership includes companies such as Pandora, Apple iTunes, Yahoo!, Rhapsody, AOL, Nokia and others involved in the online music and video business. Ohhh – a secret! Some unnamed company is stealthily seeking a Director, Communications. They don’t give much away about the type of company or industry, but job duties include overseeing editorial content/style on company publications, website management, advertising, branding, and media relations.

The National Association of Electrical and Medical Imaging Equipment Manufacturers has their sights set on hiring a new Director, Government Relations for their Medical Imaging & Technology Alliance (MITA). The Director will be responsible for advocacy on federal legislative medical device, technology, and related issues.

The National Breast Cancer Coalition invites a Public Policy Associate to join their government relations department. The new Associate will analyze/research legislation, regulations, and proposals; develop position papers, work with grassroots network, among other activities. Minimum of three years health care advocacy required; experience with women’s health issues a plus.

Hanging out with Bono

The International Program Manager (note: pdf link) for the Council of State Governments will serve as staff coordinator for CSG committees/affiliates, produce newsletters/reports, and work on policy issues related to trade/investment issues. Salary runs from $53-$70k, apply by October 31.

The National Association of College and University Business Administrators seeks a Director, Congressional Relations to serve as NACUBO’s primary legislative affairs expert and advocate.

The Arms Control Association invites applications for a full-time Research Associate dealing with nuclear weapons policy and nonproliferation issues. Responsibilities include regular reporting for Arms Control Today, as well as outreach to media, policy-makers and peers in the arms control arena. They begin reviewing applications on Nov. 15.

The ONE Campaign focuses on debt, AIDS, trade, and other issues related to helping African and other poor nations. They are looking for a new Assistant Director for U.S. Government Relations to enlist support from Congress, NGOs and other policy influencers. A Master’s in International Relations, Political Science or related field and four years of experience advocating and mobilizing efforts in support of Africa-focused legislation are required before you get to hang out with Bono and friends.

FasterCures is “dedicated to saving lives by saving time” – more specifically, by helping eliminate barriers to efficiency, effectiveness, and expediency in current systems of disease prevention, research, development, and treatment. Strong Attachment to the Boating Industry

The National Association of Manufacturers has an opening for Director, Health Policy to lobby on healthcare issues affecting U.S. manufacturing and global competitiveness. NAM also has internship opportunities available.

The Qatar Foundation’s mission include educating Americans about Qatar, Islam and the Arab world, along with facilitating educational exchange with the U.S. The Foundation is searching for an Executive Director (note: pdf link) head the organization, serve as spokesperson, and lead fundraising efforts.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has two positions with its U.S. India Business Council. As Senior Manager, you’ll work for two Senior Directors to help build membership in the Council and support its activities. Salary to the mid-$60k range. The Council’s Program Coordinator will handle a range of communications and administrative functions, and perhaps silently covet at the Senior Manager position. Pay is up to $40k.

The National Marine Manufacturers Association, representing the recreational boating industry, has a spot on deck for a Vice President, Government Affairs to oversee federal, state and local legislative/regulatory activities. They also – quite reasonably – ask that you “have (or be able to develop) a strong attachment to the recreational boating industry.” No mention of boating-related perks in the announcement – but you have to figure there has to be some pretty fun aspects to this job.

Albany, N.Y.-based law firm Tully Rinckey seeks a Lobbyist for their D.C. office. Five or more years of Hill/lobbying experience is desired.

The U.S. Agency for International Development has an opening for a Correspondence Assistant. Duties include reporting of activities and review and verification of data and facts for use in agency correspondence, reports and studies. Pay range is $39-56k; apply by Oct. 31.

The Congressional Affairs Specialist for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission will “ensure effective and harmonious relationships are developed and maintained with the Congress, coalitions of government officials, consumer and public interest groups, and the general public.” Sounds like lobbying to me. Pay is $98-127k per year, and the job closes Oct. 30.

The Red Cross seeks a Senior Web Designer with HTML, DreamWeaver, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Flash chops – along with experience in usability and other design-related skills.

We'll go far afield for our last public affairs opportunity today - to Las Vegas, where the folks at the Marajuana Policy Project are in the market for a Communications Director for work with the media, opinion-leaders and public audiences. Compensation in the $40-50,000 range, plus you probably get to go to next year's party at the Playboy Mansion.
