Insured Retirement Institute - Assistant Vice President, Federal Affairs

The Insured Retirement Institute (IRI) is a not-for-profit organization that for more than 20 years has been a mainstay of service, commitment and collaboration within the insured retirement industry and is considered to be the authoritative source of all things pertaining to annuities, insured retirement strategies and retirement planning.

Primary Responsibilities
-- Reports to the Senior Vice President & General Counsel
-- Collaborate with SVP and General Counsel and CEO to execute a federal government affairs strategic and annual plans
-- Maintain broad awareness of the political environment, trends, positioning and opportunities for implementing IRI’s interests
-- Work with member representatives and external stakeholders to drive results through the federal legislative and political process
-- Develop and maintain high-level, bipartisan political relationships and relationships with insurance, securities, retirement and banking industry leaders and other trade associations
-- Collaborate with allied trade associations to promote common goals
-- Collaborate with SVP and General Counsel and CEO to identify and establish federal affairs priorities
-- Utilize strategic thinking and expertise in the industry to achieve strategic goals at the federal level
-- Lobby Congress and the Administration, including the White House, OMB, Department of Treasury, and Department of Labor to support industry goals
-- Create lobbying reports and ensure adherence to federal lobbying and election laws
-- Provide leadership to ensure political support is aligned with industry interests
-- Collaborate and communicate with numerous IRI team members working on broad initiatives and work closely with members of the Government Affairs Team
-- Participate in staffing the IRI Government Affairs Advisory Council, Federal Regulatory Affairs Committee, and IRI PAC Oversight Committee, and represent IRI on a number of other committees
-- Prepare and present positions on federal legislative and regulatory issues affecting IRI members
-- Manage the IRI Political Action Committee (IRI PAC)
-- Create and manage a strategic plan
-- Solicit appropriate parties to donate to the IRI PAC
-- Assist in determine appropriate candidates to receive contributions
-- Attend PAC events
-- Ensure compliance with FEC rules and filings

Education, Experience, Competencies and Skills
-- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field required; advanced degree, or equivalent, preferred; J.D. a plus.
-- At least 7-10 years work experience in lobbying/public relations firm, policy staff/political campaigns, Capitol Hill legislative staff, and/or government affairs office for a trade association or company; experience with relevant congressional committees is a plus, including House Committees on Ways and Means, Financial Services, and Education and Workforce, and Senate Committees on Finance, Banking, Housing and Urban Fairs, Budget, and Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.
-- Command of issues relevant to the Insured Retirement Institute, including tax, retirement, insurance and securities, or ability to learn the issues quickly
-- Proven record of success in previous positions. Demonstrated ability to set strategies, implement tactics, and meet objectives
-- Excellent political contacts and ability to network in the political arena
-- Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills are essential

Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America - Public Relations Intern

The Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America, Inc., a national association representing a quarter of a million professionals and small business owners across the country, is looking for an intern to assist the directors of public affairs and broadcast media.

The public relations intern would help with media monitoring, writing projects, the association’s annual events, video projects and other online and organizational projects.

The ideal candidate is a mass communication, journalism or public affairs/relations undergraduate student interested in public relations from the perspective of a business association. Good organizational and communication skills, intellectual curiosity and a respectful and professional attitude are required. Must be able to juggle multiple deadlines and work independently.

This is not a paid internship. You will be compensated with professional experience and academic credit.


• Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university and course that provides academic credit for this internship

• Strong written and verbal communication skills

• Familiarity with Associated Press (AP) style is a plus

• Self-starter; ability to meet tight deadlines; strong attention to detail
