CQ/Roll Call - Researcher, BillTrack

Are you a congressional nerd, policy wonk or political junkie? If so, you should know that CQ/Roll Callseeks a researcher for its Research team to help compile information from (and on) areas such as the Congressional Record, Federal Register, House and Senate floors, government personnel, congressional events and other Washington news events. This individual will work with other team members to ensure the comprehensiveness and accuracy of CQ Roll Call content. The position requires exceptional accuracy & attention to detail, as well as the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. Successful candidate will have good communication skills with strong grammar skills & computer familiarity, and the ability to multi-task and handle tight deadlines without sacrificing attention to detail and precision. Database experience a plus. Experience with Congress is preferred. Flexibility to work late is necessary, as you will be covering the Senate and House when they are in session, gavel-to-gavel.

1. SUMMARY: A Research and Content Development researcher is responsible for the timely and accurate production, publication and maintenance of various CQ Roll Call databases, external data feeds and other content to provide CQ Roll Call with superior federal, state and local data. The job requires a strong attention to detail, thoroughness, and an understanding of the legislative process and internal operating systems.

2. ACCOUNTABLE FOR: Research and Content Development researcher is responsible for:
• Quickly & accurately collecting, processing, coding & publishing legislative data, documents, amendments, schedules, transcripts, bill information or other data as assigned by a manager when Congress is in session. This will require late hours/weekend work.
• Respond to and act on client questions or requests for information, documents, transcripts or other data in timely manner.
• A demonstrated understanding of operational tools, procedures and troubleshooting.
• Working with editors to build professional skills.
• Cultivating relationships with congressional sources and government agencies for informational, journalistic and document source purposes and helping colleagues do the same.
• Contributing to the larger newsroom’s newsgathering efforts.
• Any and all other duties as assigned.

3. DECISION RIGHTS: A Research and Content Development researcher is expected to contribute ideas about product priorities and what data may need additional work as well as ideas about how to improve operations and CQ products.

4. PERFORMANCE MEASURES:
• Providing subscribers with complete, timely coverage of error-free, quality legislative information within set deadlines and consistent with CQ Roll Call style.
• Developing an understanding of the CQ Roll Call databases and the procedures for updating that content.
• Successful development of knowledge of CQ Roll Call legislative tracking products and legislative procedures.
• Successful balancing of long hours and a capricious congressional schedule while juggling multiple assignments.
• Only considering a task complete once he or she has confirmed the content’s successful posting to CQ.com or other specified CQ Roll Call product.

5. ESSENTIAL CAPABILITIES:
• One year of experience with the federal government, politics, legislative policy or Capitol Hill.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
• Top-notch researching skills plus a attention to detail and organizational abilities.
• Ability to work on multiple projects while working long hours and meeting strict deadlines.
• Familiarity w/ Congress/legislative process and preferably some knowledge of congressional operations, procedure and policymaking.
• Ability to develop sources, gather info & process content consistent with CQ Roll Call style.
• Basic knowledge of HTML, the Internet, Microsoft Office and electronic media.
