We work to achieve legislative, media and fundraising goals for clients who work in progressive domestic and foreign policy, social justice, human rights, faith-based advocacy, health care, conservation, women’s rights and arts and culture.   2. Organic Trade Association - Government Affairs Associate

    Location: Washington, DC

    Position Summary: Working under the supervision of and in collaboration with the Vice President of Government Affairs, the Government Affairs Associate manages Organic Trade Association (OTA) legislative activities, informs and engages OTA members in political activity, and assists the Vice President of Government Affairs in projects as requested.

    Functions as a creative member of OTA’s team; shares information effectively to assist others in doing OTA’s work. Demonstrates personal responsibility in job performance. Supports OTA’s mission and purpose through the activities of the department.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Develop and implement OTA policy events to increase OTA’s relationships and political impact, including annual Hill Visit Day
    • Develop and deliver targeted issue campaigns on legislation, including potential targeted member fly-ins
    • Develop relationships with legislative staff; educate staff on all aspects of organic agriculture, industry, and trade and the potential impacts of legislation on organic
    • Maintain database of congressional contacts and activity
    • Conduct legislative research and analysis to inform OTA policy strategy and development; prepare clear and concise analytical pieces including bill summaries and side-by-side analysis, hearing summaries, member alerts, updates, and memos.
    • Facilitate, manage, and implement OTA member involvement in legislative activities to increase OTA’s relationships and political impact
    • Monitor relevant state activity, organize and manage targeted state campaigns, and develop relationships with state Departments of Agriculture
    • Draft correspondence, policy communications, and public comments as needed
    • Other research, policy, writing, and other support for Vice President of Government Affairs as needed
    • Travel to meetings or events as required
    • Attend staff meetings

    Minimum Requirements:

    Experience: Two or more years in grassroots or legislative advocacy

    Education: Bachelors Degree; job-related continuing education a plus

    Skills/Knowledge: Strong analysis, written and oral communications skills; strong computer skills using Microsoft Word, Excel and database applications a must; experience with Capwiz/CQ Roll Call a plus. Attention to detail, able to work independently and perform routine work, good interpersonal skills, team member. Able to work well in a fast-paced collaborative environment with critical deadlines.
