    The Senior Policy Analyst provides leadership and support to the entire DC Action team for recurring and special projects under DC Action’s legislative priorities. This includes following local policy developments and conducting legislative research to inform policy positions, objectives and strategies on issues related to children, youth and families in the District.

    ORGANIZATION

    DC Action for Children is a private, non-partisan, nonprofit advocacy organization working toward a vision that all DC children and youth who are most in need of health, education, safety and financial well-being receive quality services to support their development and ensure they thrive. DC Action provides data analysis and policy leadership on issues facing DC children & families. We are the home of DC KIDS COUNT, which tracks key indicators of child well-being in the District of Columbia; our advocacy agenda is based on these data.

    DUTIES

    Policy Research & Analysis
    • Identify, monitor and lead analysis of all relevant legislation in the District that impacts DC children and families;
    • Conduct policy-specific research and investigate trends in child well-being, including early care and education, K-12 education, health, and youth related content areas;
    • Lead analysis of annual budget for potential effects on DC children and families, identify advocacy opportunities to change the budget based on organizational strategic goals;
    • Support the production and content of advocacy materials, including public hearing testimonies, issue briefs, briefing papers, and policy fact sheets;
    • Perform tasks involving writing reports, memos and professional correspondence;
    • Track advocacy activities and accomplishments for board and grant reporting;
    • Supervise fellows, volunteers and/or interns focused on legislative work as needed.

    Education and Outreach
    • Lead the advocacy efforts of DC Action for Children by building relationships with DC government officials, including executive branch, legislative branch and agency staff, as well as potential allies within community based organizations;
    • Manage responses to data and policy analysis requests from DC government offices;
    • Conduct targeted outreach to government officials to raise awareness of DC KIDS COUNT Data and its potential uses in policy decision making;
    • Contribute to DC KIDS COUNT reports, briefs and projects as needed;
    • Create easy to read blogs, charts, graphs and interactive tools for the website that show policy progress and impact;
    • Work with staff and executive team to plan major outreach campaigns and media efforts.

    Admin / Development
    • Coordinate and assist with meeting planning, including logistical tasks such as confirming meeting space, creating meeting agendas, and compiling meeting notes;
    • Perform all other duties as needed and assigned by director supervisor (Executive Director).

    REQUIRED
    • Graduate degree in education, public policy, public health, social work or a related field required; 2-3 years of relevant work experience preferred.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Detail-oriented and independent, with the ability to work on multiple projects under tight timelines.
    • Interest in working in a small, entrepreneurial organization committed to the well-being of children in DC.

    DESIRED
    • Prior experience in child advocacy, education, early childhood, public health or a related field.
    • Prior experience with and knowledge of DC government and local issues relating to children and families.
